The Conway and Georgetown County communities are mourning the tragic loss of Wendell “Jay” Holbert III, who died following a fatal boating accident on the Sampit River in South Carolina. He was 49 years old.

According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), the deadly collision occurred Saturday morning near the Campbell Boat Landing area in Maryville along the Sampit River. Authorities reported that two boats were involved in the incident, which prompted an immediate emergency response from rescue crews and law enforcement officials.

Despite efforts by first responders, Holbert sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Georgetown County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity as Wendell “Jay” Holbert III of Conway, South Carolina.

Investigators have not yet released complete details surrounding the circumstances of the collision. Officials continue working to determine what factors may have contributed to the crash, including waterway conditions, vessel operation, visibility, speed, and other possible elements. Authorities also have not publicly confirmed how many people were aboard the vessels at the time of the incident.

As the investigation remains ongoing, community members throughout Conway and Georgetown County have begun sharing condolences and memories honoring Jay Holbert’s life. The fatal collision has also renewed conversations surrounding boating safety along the Sampit River and surrounding waterways, especially during periods of increased recreational traffic.
