The northern Idaho community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Coy Jensen and 48-year-old Josh Pilch, who died in a tragic head-on collision on US-95 near Sagle on Memorial Day. The sudden accident has left family members, friends, classmates, and church communities grieving deeply as they come to terms with the loss of two individuals remembered for their kindness, service, and strong connections to those around them.

According to Idaho State Police, the crash occurred on Monday afternoon south of Sagle near Sandpoint. Authorities reported that a red 2011 Buick LaCrosse driven by Coy Jensen crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound Dodge Ram 2500. Both Coy Jensen and his stepfather, Josh Pilch, died at the scene due to the severity of the impact.

Two occupants in the Dodge Ram were also injured in the collision and transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Officials confirmed that one of the injured individuals required air transport for advanced care. The crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the factors that led to the vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic.

The tragedy has been especially devastating for the Sandpoint community, where Coy Jensen was a well-known and respected student at Sandpoint High School. He was just days away from graduation and was expected to finish with high honors. Family friends shared that he had been preparing for a two-year mission to Santiago, Chile, later in the summer as part of his faith service with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Coy is being remembered as a bright, compassionate, and energetic young man whose presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Friends and classmates describe him as someone with a warm personality, a contagious laugh, and a genuine ability to make others feel valued and included. He was active in school activities, church programs, and athletics, including participation on the Sandpoint High swim team, where he earned respect from teammates and coaches alike.

In addition to Coy’s passing, the community is also mourning Josh Pilch, who is remembered as a devoted father figure and a caring family man. Those who knew him describe him as someone who played an important role in building a loving and close-knit household, always showing support for his family and those around him. Friends say both Coy and Josh shared strong values centered on kindness, generosity, and service to others.

As news of the crash spread, an outpouring of grief followed across northern Idaho. Friends, neighbors, classmates, and members of the church community have shared tributes honoring both lives, expressing sorrow over the sudden loss and offering prayers for the grieving family members. Many have described the tragedy as unimaginable, especially given Coy’s upcoming graduation and future plans.

Community members have come together in support, reflecting on memories shared with Coy and Josh while also offering assistance to the grieving family. Vigils, messages of condolence, and social media tributes continue to highlight the deep impact both individuals had on those around them.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash, including why the vehicle driven by Coy Jensen crossed the center line. Officials have not released additional details as the investigation remains ongoing.

While the community waits for answers, the focus has shifted toward remembrance and healing. Friends and loved ones are honoring Coy Jensen and Josh Pilch by celebrating their lives, their values, and the lasting influence they had on everyone who knew them.

The Sagle and Sandpoint communities continue to mourn together, united in grief over a tragedy that has left a profound and lasting void. Coy Jensen and Josh Pilch will be remembered for their kindness, their love for family, and the positive impact they made during their lives, which ended far too soon.
